How to Free the Mac of Spyware

By J.S. Copper, eHow Contributor

Luckily for most Mac OS X owners (and the Apple marketing department), the systems are relatively free of viruses and spyware. However, every now and then you may come across something that bogs your system down. Albeit rare, trojans and spyware do in fact exist on Macs. Much like a rare bird in the South American rain forest, you know they are out there even if you never see one in person.

Things You’ll Need

  •  OS X Anti-virus

Instructions

1.  Download and install your anti-virus of choice. There are a few solid options for the Mac. The big names in anti-virus all have Mac counterparts, but there are some great freeware options as well in the form of iAntivirus and ClamXav.

2.  Run a complete scan of your Macintosh HD. Delete or quarantine any detected spyware or virus files.

3.  Run System Update from the Apple menu. Wait for the program to check for any available updates to your Mac OS X system and programs. Install all the updates so that you are running the most up-to-date version of OS X. Apple periodically releases bug fixes and security updates to better protect your system from future threats.

4.  Update your web browser. Using a modern, up-to-date web browser is an essential way of keeping threats at bay. Most modern browsers alert you when you are visiting sites that may cause your computer harm. Check for available updates from within your browser application by selecting “Check for Updates” from the menu bar.

5.  Allow your anti-virus program of choice to run automated weekly scans. View the help files for instructions for your specific application. Doing this keeps your computer free of any new threats without you having to even think about it.

You can, but both systems scanning may seriously slow down your computer. Better to choose just one to use.
